MT World, Rooted Kava Bar

Hi all beautiful souls
Today we want to write about a very exiting and really cool place in San Diego. A place with an amazing atmosphere and beautiful spiritual energy. The place we talk about is Rooted Kava Bar in the suburb Hillcrest. We bumped into this place when we were on our way home from Hillcrest Farmers Market. Went in to try a free sample of the Kava, liked it so much so we decided to go here with some friends of us.

What is Kava?

If you never heard about Kava or Kava Kava as it is called we can tell you little bit about it. Kava is a root that is very common in the south pacific islands like Tonga, Vanuatu, Hawaii and throughout Micronesia.

“Kava is a ceremonial tea consumed in the South pacific Islands that has scientifically proven anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, and muscle relaxing properties. It is a sacred tea that when taken over time brings a feeling of happiness and well being. It promotes mental clarity and has a mild pain relieving property as well, equivalent to taking an aspirin, that gently soothes any aches in the body. ” Source Rooted Kava Bar

Time for some Kava!
So we went into the bar a Sunday evening with 4 of our friends. Straight away we got greeted by Adesh who owns the bar with her partner. We got showed to a table and were presented the Kavas of the evening. Before we decided what Kava we should order we got some free samples.

Our friends liked the coconut flavored Kava, med and Melanie decided  to take the original a bit stronger drink with only Kava. I (Tobias) have tried Kava in several occasions before and the one I remember the most is in Tonga Island were we shared Kava in a Kava Circle in the jungle.

For me Kava taste like very earthy flavor and you can really feel the root plus you get numb in your month, lips by the drink. Melanie also though it tasted very earthy and a bit like lick on a rock.

The effect we felt from Kava is very relaxing and your whole body got calm. Very hard to describe but a very pleasant feeling. We made a video from our visit at the Rooted Kava Bar:

MT World Highly recommend this place to visit if you are in San Diego. The owners are super sweet and warm and welcoming, the atmosphere at Rooted Kava Bar is very friendly and relaxing. They also offer Yoga Classes next door to the bar.

Many people call it “Whole Pay check” but for us that comes from Sweden and have nothing like this and we wish we would, for us its like a Disney land.  In Sweden we only have small organic stores, and if you call Whole foods “Whole Pay check” you should come here and after that you would have a different opinion 🙂  hi hi…..

We love it and we can say like this, “its not a place to bring MT World to if you are in a hurry” 🙂 because we can stay there for hours , ha ha ha and look at all the fantastic produce, products and yummy things. Maybe that is why we cal it Disney Land!

2. Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market:
This is just a fantastic place! Located in Ocean Beach area you find Peoples Organic Foods Market. This is like a smaller version of Whole Foods and most of the fruit and greens comes from local farms in the area. The quality of the fruit and greens is really good and you will see written tags what farms they come from, so you know exactly what you eat. They also have totally amazing date rolls with cinnamon and dried apple! On the 2nd floor you will find a Café that serves buffet with healthy salads and fruit. Really recommend to go here and buy some nice healthy lunch and take with you to Ocean Beach and enjoy.

3. La Jolla:
This is one of our favorite place in San Diego. La Jolla is a beautiful area next to Mission and Pacific Beach. Here you can visit a big Farmers Market on Sundays (9 AM-1 PM). La Jolla is a wealthy area in San Diego and it has a beautiful walk path (ocean parade) along the coast were you spot seals sunbathing on the beach, Pelicans and other sea birds. After a beautiful walk enjoying the sun you can drop in at one of the healthy Café s for a smoothie or a nice vegan meal or just have a fruit picnic in the park by the Ocean Parade .

Dangerous to eat rice? How much ARSENIC is in your rice!!

Are you a ricelover? Do you eat a lot of rice? Do you give a lot of rice to your kids?

Now we don´t only talk about cooked rice, many products that you consume are made of rice or have rice in them like ricemilk, riceflour, ricepuffs, riceprotenin, ricepudding…

rice products, MT World

Hi it is MT World here. We are Tobias and Melanie a couple from Sweden that travel the world and spread message about healthy, happy living.

Most of the time we write about fun, positive things and fruits. But sometimes we need to give information about not so happy, but very important things, because we know it can benefit your health.

Arsenic rice, MT World

So how dangerous can it be?

New study’s show that it is more arsenic then we think in our rice products, and if you consume a lot of it can have negative results on your health and body:

Regular exposure to small amounts of arsenic can increase the risk of
bladder lung, and skin cancer,
* heart disease
* type 2 diabetes
* Recent studies also suggest that arsenic exposure in utero may    have effects on the baby’s immune system.

Don’t rely on an “organic” label—rice grown organically was found to have the same arsenic levels as “conventionally” grown rice. While organic rice may contain fewer pesticides, arsenic levels are still high.

Here is  a video from Consumer Report that brings up this very important issue:

Are there some options?
Now you probably wonder if it is something you can do, you might be a rice lover and still want to eat rice. It also depends a lot of were it is grown for example:

White basmati rice from California, India, and Pakistan, and sushi rice from the U.S. on average has half of the inorganic-arsenic amount of most other types of rice.

Amaranth, buckwheat, millet, and polenta or grits have very small levels of inorganic arsenic, they are also gluten free. Bulgur, barley, and farro, which contain gluten, also have very little arsenic. And another good option is Quinoa that also contains very little of arsenic.

Arsenic in rice, MT World

What is your opinion?

Do you eat a lot of rice or rice products?  Do you know were your rice coming from and how much arsenic it contains?

Loquat fruit, how to eat it and health benefits !

The loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is a species of flowering plant in the family Rosaceae, native to south-central China. It is a large evergreen shrub or small tree, grown commercially for its yellow fruit.

Loquat fruits begin appearing in the trees by the end of winter season. The fruits are oval to pear in shape, appear in bunches of 5-20, and measure about 3 cm in width and 3-5 cm in length.

The Loquat fruits have soft texture. Externally, the skin surface is fuzzy but smooth with yellow to orange color, inside it have a yellow or white flesh and some unedible .

Here is a video for we made for you guys to show you how to open and eat this wonderful Loquat!

Enjoy and pleas comment on the video if you like to 🙂

Health benefits of Loquat fruit

  • Delicious, loquats are very low in calories; provide just 47 calories per 100 g. Nonetheless, they are rich in insoluble dietary fiber, pectin. Pectin retains moisture in the colon, and thus functions as bulk laxative. By this way, it helps to protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time to toxic substances as well as binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon.
  • Pectin has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing its re-absorption in the colon by binding bile acids resulting in its excretion from the body.
  • Loquat fruit is an excellent source of vitamin-A (provides about 1528 IU or 51% of daily recommended levels of this vitamin per 100g), and phenolic flavonoid antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, neo-chlorogenic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, feruloylquinic acid, protocatechuic acid, epicatechin, coumaric acids and ferulic acid. Ripe fruits have more chlorogenic acid concentrations.
  • Vitamin A maintains integrity of mucus membranes, and skin. Lab studies have shown that consumption of natural fruits rich in vitamin-A, and flavonoids helps to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.
  • Fresh fruit is very good in potassium and some B-complex vitamins such as folates, vitamin B-6 and niacin and contain small amounts of vitamin-C. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Furthermore, the fruit is also a good source of iron, copper, calcium, manganese, and other minerals. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Iron is required for as a cofactor in cellular oxidation as well for red blood cell formation.

How to eat Kumquat? The World´s smallest citrus?

Is Kumquat the fruit for you?

Kumquat is a very funny fruit and as well a really nice and healthy fruit! It looks like  a small orange size as a walnut, but a bit more egg shaped. This fruit is originally from Kina but has spread around the world. In San Diego they are growing a lot and we saw a lot of Kumquat trees when we walked around in the neighborhood.

MT World Kumquat

Kumquat is also eaten the whole fruit with everything and the seeds are also edible. It taste like a mix between lime, lemon and orange and is a bit sour inside but the skin is very sweet and a little bit bitter.

This is not a favorite fruit for us but we kinda like a couple of them but not like eating a whole bag at once. But it is a nice little snack to eat on the go. Here is a video we did about the fruit:

A very healthy fruit

Kumquat is a very healthy fruit and have lots of benefits here is some of them:

  • Fresh kumquats are packed with numerous health benefiting poly-phenolic flavonoid anti-oxidants such as carotenes, lutein, zea-xanthin, tannins…etc. Kumquat peel composes many important essential oils, including limonene, pinene, a-bergamotene, caryophyllene, a-humulene, and a-muurolene. Together, these compounds impart special citrus aroma to the fruit.
  • Further, fresh fruits contain adequate levels of some of the anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin A, C and E. Altogether, these phyto-chemical compounds in kumquat fruit help scavenge harmful oxygen derived free radicals from the body and thereby protect us from cancers, diabetes, degenerative diseases and infections.
  • As in oranges, kumquats also very rich in vitamin C. 100 g fruit provides 47.9 or 73% of RDA (Recommended daily allowances). Vitamin-C is one of the powerful natural anti-oxidant which has many essential biological roles to play such as collagen synthesis and wound healing. This vitamin has anti-viral and anti-cancer activities, and helps prevent neuro-degenerative diseases, arthritis, diabetes…etc by removing oxidant free-radicals from the body.
  • Kumquat has good levels of B-complex group of vitamins such as thiamin, niacin, pyridoxine, folates, and pantothenic acid. These vitamins function as co-factors for metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fats.

Have you tried Kumquat? What is your opinion about the fruit? What do you use it for? Please leave a comment!
